The Engineered Racing Surfaces Coalition
is comprised of multiple North American Thoroughbred racing tracks with engineered, or “synthetic,” surfaces, and was formed to serve as a resource for horse racing participants, media and fans about the benefits of these surfaces.
What are Engineered Racing Surfaces?
Produced by various manufacturers, engineered racing surfaces are a combination of new and recycled products including silica sand, synthetic fibers and rubber, all blended with a wax coating to prevent moister absorption and allow water to flow quickly through the top surface. The surface is part of an entire structure that includes a specially-designed vertical drainage system.
